bio
Melissa's art and writing reach for calm, pushing away the noise, the contrived busyness. They reflect her lifelong study of nature and human nature, her desire to understand. It's a symbiotic relationship --her writing and art. She often says she can't do one without practicing the other. Naturally, they often intersect. Both allow her to release her observances and questions for you to contemplate if you're inclined to do so. Melissa wants to tell you things. Calm. Truth. Because there is this epidemic of urgency and hostility. Of not knowing how to respectfully disagree and still be friends. Of not always being able to distinguish what's true, what's real and what's not in our easily manipulated digital world.
Her current pieces are minimalistic contemporary works on paper using mostly natural mediums. She often uses elements from the natural world as tools to create her work -- real and raw -- rebelling against a world of filters and fake.
Melissa is grateful that her writings have appeared in several literary journals across the United States, most recently in River and South, Cathexis Northwest, and New Plains Review.
She hopes they speak to you --these thoughts that have lingered long on the edge of her mind.
